Original clay tiles lifted, sorted and re-laid on new membrane and treated battens. Forty-odd cracked ones replaced with salvage that matched. Chimney repointed while the scaffold was there, because it will never be cheaper.

Leadwork
The bit that actually leaks.
Nine times in ten the water is not coming through the tiles. It is coming in where the roof meets something else — a chimney, a parapet, a valley, the back of a bay. That is lead, and lead is the part most firms sub out or settle with a tube of mastic.
- Code 4 and Code 5, never flashband
- Self-adhesive tape is a two-year fix sold as a repair. We have pulled a great deal of it off other people’s work.
- Cut and dressed on site
- Bossed by hand to the actual shape of your chimney, rather than folded flat in a yard and hoped over on the day.
- Joints welted, not sealed
- Lead moves about four millimetres a metre on a sunny day. Anything rigid holding it down will crack. Ours is not holding it down.

Not a call centre and not a form. Three questions: what is it doing, when did it start, and can you see it from the ground. A fair number get solved on the phone for nothing, which costs us a job and wins us the next three.

Ladder up, camera out, photographs of what is actually wrong rather than what we would like to sell you. You get those photographs whether you use us or not — they are yours, and they are useful to whoever you do use.

Itemised, fixed, VAT shown, scaffold in it, and valid for ninety days so you have time to get two more quotes and compare them properly. If we are the expensive one, we would rather you knew why.

You get a start date and the window we are working to. If the forecast turns and we have to move you, you hear it the day before — not at half seven on the morning you booked the day off.

Scaffold first. We never strip more roof in a day than we can cover by four o’clock, whatever the sky says at lunchtime. One photograph a day to your phone, because you cannot see the work and it is your house.

Magnet over the drive
Scaffold down, skip gone, and a magnet run over the drive and the lawn for nails before we ask you to walk round it with us. Guarantee posted out within the week, on paper, with the job written on it.

Four commitments and the six questions everybody asks on the doorstep. Nothing here is hidden behind a plus sign, because a page that makes you click to find out about deposits has told you something already.
- Fixed price, in writing
- The number on the quote is the number on the invoice. Anything extra gets agreed before a tool moves, or it does not happen at all.
- Scaffold in the price
- Not a line added on later once you are committed. If the job needs a tower or a full run, it is already costed and it is on the sheet.
- We clear up
- Skip, magnet sweep for nails, and the drive left as we found it. Every time, as standard, rather than when somebody asks.
- One number, one roofer
- Whoever quotes the job runs the job. You are never handed to an office that has never seen your roof and cannot picture it.

Asked on the doorstep
- How long does a re-roof actually take?
- A three-bed semi is four to six working days, plus a day either end for the scaffold. A terrace is quicker; a detached with hips and dormers is slower. Rain adds days, and we will tell you which ones it added rather than quietly extending the end date.
- Do I need scaffolding, or can you do it off a ladder?
- If a roof is coming off, you need scaffold, and anyone offering to strip it from a ladder is telling you something useful about how the rest of the job will go. Gutter clears, a slipped slate and most leadwork repairs are genuinely ladder or tower work — and we do not charge you for a full run you do not need.
- Will my insurance cover storm damage?
- Often, if the wind was genuinely strong enough and the roof was in reasonable order beforehand. What insurers want is dated photographs and a written report describing the damage rather than the repair, so that is what we send, free, on the day. We will also tell you honestly when we think a claim is not worth your excess.
- What happens if it rains halfway through?
- The roof is sheeted and battened down every night, and we never open up more than we can close by four. If a week turns genuinely bad we stop, make it watertight and come back — you are not left under a tarpaulin with an apology and a half-finished ridge.
- Do you take a deposit?
- Not on domestic work under ten thousand pounds. Materials go on our account, and you pay when the scaffold is down and you have walked round the job with us. Special-order tiles are the one exception, and if that is your job it is written on the quote with the reason next to it.
- What if you find something under the tiles?
- Perished battens and a few rotten boards are expected and already in the price. A cracked purlin is not — so we stop, photograph it, and ring you with a number before anyone carries on. Nothing lands on the invoice that you have not agreed to out loud first.
- Do I need to be in while you work?
- No. We need an outside tap and somewhere legal to stand the skip, and after that you can go to work. Most customers see us properly on the first morning and the last afternoon.
